Lucky to be Alive?
Where is the topic of abortion in this election? Why is that topic not being discussed more in this election? I agree that the economy is important, but it has dwarfed the normal issues that are raised during an election. I've heard abortion alluded to by Sarah Palin, but I think that's about it. It needs to be a part of the discussion.
When I was younger, I used to wonder why abortion was such a volatile issue in politics - this was before I had children and before I'd really given much thought to it. Now I understand. How anyone can watch an unborn child move during an ultrasound or other imaging devices and still support abortion? As technology improves, we constantly improve our ability to see that life develops earlier and earlier: at conception. A six-month old baby cannot take care of itself. It will die if not fed, changed, kept warm, etc. The argument that it's OK to end a life in the womb because it cannot live on its own is flawed. The child is alive, even though it's not been born yet: ending its life is murder. I think that there should be exceptions for some things such as endangerment of the mother's life, possibly rape and incest, certain genetic or medical conditions of the baby that would render its life tortuous, unbearable, or vegetable like. Abortion should not be available to conveniently end an unwanted pregnancy. If you kill a six-month old baby you're a murder: what's the difference if you kill the baby while it's still in the womb?
If you're a Christian, I fail to see how you can support any candidate who supports abortion. This issue alone should put you in McCain's camp.
Here are statements on abortion taken from both candidates web sites:
Barack Obama
Supports a Woman's Right to Choose:
Barack Obama understands that abortion is a divisive issue, and respects those who disagree with him. However, he has been a consistent champion of reproductive choice and will make preserving women's rights under Roe v. Wade a priority as President. He opposes any constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's decision in that case.
John McCain
Human Dignity and the Sanctity of Life
Overturning Roe v. Wade
John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench.
Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states. The difficult issue of abortion should not be decided by judicial fiat.
However, the reversal of Roe v. Wade represents only one step in the long path toward ending abortion. Once the question is returned to the states, the fight for life will be one of courage and compassion - the courage of a pregnant mother to bring her child into the world and the compassion of civil society to meet her needs and those of her newborn baby. The pro-life movement has done tremendous work in building and reinforcing the infrastructure of civil society by strengthening faith-based, community, and neighborhood organizations that provide critical services to pregnant mothers in need. This work must continue and government must find new ways to empower and strengthen these armies of compassion. These important groups can help build the consensus necessary to end abortion at the state level. As John McCain has publicly noted, "At its core, abortion is a human tragedy. To effect meaningful change, we must engage the debate at a human level."
Quite a difference.
Judges
McCain's statement mentions judges. The appointment of Justices to the Supreme Court is one of the most lasting and influential appointments that a President can make. As I suggested in my previous article, Mud Slinging, Country Splitting Election, this issue should also have you voting for McCain.
Adoption
Also in a previous post I looked at the candidate's stances on family and gay marriage John McCain vs. Obama on Family, Marriage, Adoption...
Adoption is important in any discussion about abortion. How many people with adopted children, are voting for Obama? If they are, then they need to take a long hard look in the mirror and think that they're lucky that the mother of their adopted child or children didn't choose to have an abortion. And then vote for McCain.
How many adults who were adopted children themselves are voting for Obama, if so, they too need to take a long hard look in the mirror and be thankful that they're alive. And then vote for McCain.
Until next time,
Recoil
P.S. Here are a few Bible verses that are relevant to this issue...
- For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be (Psalm 139:13-16).
- Yet You brought me out of the womb; You made me trust in You even at my mother's breast. From birth I was cast upon You; from my mother's womb You have been my God (Psalm 22:9-10).
- Did not He who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers? (Job 31:15).
- Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture (Psalm 100:3).
- This is what the LORD says--He who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you ... (Isaiah 44:2).
- And now the LORD says--he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength (Isaiah 49:5).
- The word of the LORD came to me, saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations" (Jeremiah 1:4-5).
- Did not He who made me in the womb make him, And the same one fashion us in the womb? (Job 31:15).
