I see a lot of black people driving cars with Obama bumper stickers. Don't get me wrong, I see non-black people with them too. However, I see a lot of black people with Obama bumper stickers; more than I think had presidential candidate bumper stickers in the last few elections. I realize that is a very unscientific calculation, but it's my gut feeling.
It makes me wonder how many people plan on voting for Obama and are supporting Obama for the sole reason that he's black. Wait a minute... there's a problem with that... he's only half-black. Ok. I guess that's close enough, especially since he does not seem to like his white half very much.
I'm very concerned that a large number of people will vote for Obama because he's black and only because he's black. These may be people who have never voted before, or, who do not regularly vote. These may be people who do not have any knowledge of the issues other than Obama wants change and he's black.
It's a good thing to vote. Everyone who can vote should vote. But - that vote should be cast with the same seriousness, respect, and fear that you would have facing barrage of machine-gun fire and a drawn bayonet - for that is how our right to vote was secured. A vote should not be lightly given. A vote should not be cast simply because a candidate is white, black, purple, or green.
A vote should be given to the candidate most suited to the job and who will do the best job for the country. Some issues such as the economy, taxes, national security, and foreign policy are complex and not easily understood. It's hard for the average person to spend a few minutes listening to each candidate and make an educated decision. I don't have a simple solution to this problem, it takes time to read and understand these things, and sadly, most people will never do so. However, like your mother probably told you: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
And speaking of sounding too good to be true, reading Obama's web site reminds me of my children's letters to Santa. All this and a pony too! A lot of people will vote for him because they fit into one of his solutions and they stand to benefit personally if that solution is implemented.
I hope enough people will realize that if they don't want Obama to be our next president they have to vote for McCain, and, they have to get people they know who don't plan on voting to vote. This could be one of the most important elections in our country's history and yet I hear people saying "I don't want Obama but he's going to win so it's no use to vote". What? Wake up people and vote!
When I'm putting my kids to bed, I will feel a lot better about their safety and future knowing that someone with experience, guts, and grit is in the oval office. Wouldn't you?
Until next time,
Recoil
