Here's a big Double Barreled Salute to Senator Jesse Helms, who passed away this July 4th.
What a fitting exit date for Jesse Helms: Independence Day! Thomas Jefferson and John Adams also died on Independence Day.
Jesse Alexander Helms, Jr. was a 5 term United States Senator from North Carolina. A Republican. He served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
I particularly like this quote from Jesse from a 1959 editorial: "Comprise, hell! If freedom is right and tyranny is wrong, why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?"
Jesse stood fast and true to his beliefs and allowed you to do the same, even if your beliefs and values were different. This is something that is missing in a lot of politicians today.
I also think that Senator Helms was not in politics for his own gains, but rather, he was one of the few politicians that actually considered himself a public servant.
North Carolina Governor Mike Easley: "Whether you liked his politics or not, Jesse Helms was a national force able to deliver for his constituents."
I didn't always agree with Jesse, but I respect anyone who keeps true to his beliefs and never sells out. I also think that we need more political leaders with values as strong as his.
Until next time,
