Tomorrow, May 15, 2006, President Bush will address the nation from the Oval Office. His topic will be immigration issues.
Today Mexican President Vicente Fox called President Bush to discuss his concern about the border between Mexico and the United States of America.
There were also protests by both supporters of immigration law relaxation and by groups opposed to it.
In Chicago, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights marched on Saturday, chanting "U.S.A" and "Si se puede," Spanish for "Yes we can." The Illinois Minuteman Project, positioned ½ block away, wanted to send the message "No amnesty, no guest-worker programs" and at times shouted, "Check their green cards" to the Coalition marchers!
Ana Maria Gonzalez-Perdomo, one of the Coalition marchers, said her son has worked for 10 years in the U.S. illegally. If he returned home, he would have to leave his three children behind. His children are legal U.S. citizens.
Breaking a family apart is a sad thing to do. But in this case, daddy needs to go home to his country. Trying to point the blame for breaking up his family at the immigration laws and saying that we need to reform them to keep immigrant families together is wrong. This is the same thing as saying we should legalize bank robbery because if I rob a bank and go to jail, I won't be able to see my children. Sorry. But if you knowingly break the law, you are aware of the consequences. I would bet, with 100% certainty, Ana Maria Gonzalez-Perdomo's son knew what he was doing, and that he also knew his children, born on U.S. soil, would be U.S citizens. His actions are irresponsible, and the pain and heartache of his separation from his family, when and if he's ever deported, is HIS fault, not ours.
Meanwhile, President Fox called President Bush and, according to the press release from President Fox's office, both agreed that a comprehensive immigration reform is needed in the United States. I'm sure that President Fox wants what's best for his people, not ours; after all, he is their President. Let's be sure to keep up the pressure on OUR elected officials, including President Bush, so they know what WE want. Remember, they won't know unless we tell them, and terms like "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" sound like a fancy way of saying "give them what they want".
The immigrant population in this country, especially the Hispanic population, has an advantage over us in communication and drive on this issue. They WILL take the initiative to tell their friends, families, and co-workers about the marches, and about things they should do to promote their cause. They are not embarrassed, but rather proud to do so. While we, the citizens of this country, dismiss the severity of the situation and don't do anything to stop it.
If 11 - 12 million people from a foreign country dropped out of the sky in parachutes, most of us would call the local law enforcement and military and expect our defense mechanisms to kick in and thwart the invasion. We would round up the invaders and detain them. They would be returned to their country when the conflict or situation was resolved. Why is it different just because they have built up slowly, over a decade or more, by coming in across the borders illegally? Why do we tolerate their organization and protests saying our laws are wrong and that they have the power to change them? This is wrong. They do not belong here. They should not be allowed to organize and protest - these are rights of the citizens of the United States of America, which they are not. They've come into this country illegally, organized into groups, staged marches, told us that they will change our laws, that they have the economic power to do so, and that they will become citizens. Yet, most Americans do not feel compelled to pick up the phone, or write a letter, or send an email to their elected officials and say enough is enough.
Remember the unity and patriotism that we all felt on 9-11, watching helplessly as America was attacked? As Americans, and citizens from other countries, were needlessly and cruelly killed? We reached out to each other, we came together, we acted, and we did what we had to do. Let do it again. Let's stand up for our country before it's too late to do so. It may take 15 to 30 minutes of your time, that's all. Email this article to every one you can. Then, tell your family, friends, and co-workers to read this and do the same if they agree. Please take the time to contact your elected officials, including the President, and say:
- No amnesty programs.
- No guest worker programs.
- No path to citizenship for illegal aliens.
- Deport illegal aliens.
- Strengthen and toughen our immigration laws by reducing the number of legal immigrants allowed into the country each year.
- Strengthen our borders and border patrols as fast and as much as possible.
- Do not give citizenship to children born on U.S. soil of illegal alien parents.
Be sure to say who you are and where you live so that your letter, fax, email, or phone call is taken seriously.
Thank you.
